Valentine's Day is a time of love and romance. But does it mean roses and chocolates for everyone? Or is it just for couples?

Valentine's Day can cause arguments, breakups and even legal action, depending on who you talk to.

But there are also many people who like the idea of celebrating love on February 14th.

Here's the lowdown on the history and meaning of Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day is an ancient religious festival in honour of St Valentine

Why is Valentine's Day a special day to celebrate love?

Valentine's Day began as a feast day for both lovers and church members in the third century AD.

In 300AD, Roman emperor Claudius II banned all marriage and marriage related celebrations. The feast has its origins in an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia, which celebrated fertility and this was combined with a pagan festival called Lupercalia, where young men would pierce women's breasts with arrows.

In 336AD Pope Gelasius outlawed both festivals and they were replaced with February 14th as a day of prayer and love.

Today Valentine's Day is a celebration of love for couples, and to symbolise the unity of all Christian couples.

Easter is the most important holiday for Christians

The church was also strict on the civil side, as they expected to marry, so Valentine's Day was a day when couples could be blessed as friends.

Around 800AD the festival spread to Christian Italy, as it was a reminder to stick to Roman customs and traditions.

However the Catholic church chose to change the name to St Valentine's Day in the Middle Ages, because the name Lupercalia meant 'boy sharing'.

The Roman founder of the cult, Saint Lupercalia was the ancient god of the fawn, and the festival celebrated the birth of spring.

Some historians think the ancient festival was to celebrate the moment the mother of the fawn gave birth, but St Valentine's Day celebration is thought to date back to the fifth century AD.

The celebration became popular in the 13th century, when roses were brought into Italy from the Middle East.

Is there a historical Valentine's Day for couples?

St Valentine's Day has always been celebrated by people to celebrate their love for one another. But the origin of the festival remains a mystery..

To conclude, valentines day is a good day to show how much you love someone, it is a very good excuse to surprise your significant other by giving him or her something amazing.
