Sword Collecting
This has been a hobby of mine since I was a young teenager, I have had plastic sword s when I was a kid then when I turned about fourteen my mum and I was walking around the Alderwood Mall when we stopped at a sword and knife shop sadly its no longer there. We bought me my first sword which was a replica of Excalibur – it was a wall mounted display sword, so there was not scabbard. It was cool and still hangs in my living room, along with many other swords and medieval weapons.
I have gotten some of my swords from catalogues or Online, but most have come from come from a person I have dealt with for over twenty years almost twenty-six years. I have even helped her with her booth at Faires and Celtic Festivals / Highland Games. So, I am kind of an arms dealer in away, she is where I got my first sword can and Katana. I own bout a hundred sword and other weapons that include halberds, daggers, throwing knives, shurikens many pocketknives, even a double balled spike morning star. I even have many movie swords, most are from the movie “Lord of the Rings” I do have a couple of Dirks that I will wear with my kilts once in a while and a Sgian Dubh for each of my Dress Kilt outfits.
Swords always had a fascinating history in my opinion for being of the oldest weapons in the world that is still in use by people. For fencing – Olympic or live steel, collecting or even for protection in the form of sword canes.
Being a live steel fighter, you have to be sure the sword you use has to be of good quality and last more than just a couple of hits. A standard display sword will not hold up, sure you can use it, but after a couple of hits, if it doesn’t snap in half there will be so many dings on the blade. A good live steel sword can cost from four hundred and up.

I think you should check out the links, you might be surprised, and find a new interest. Along with the live steel sword, I do own a few practice ones such as bokkens which are in the shape of Katana’s and Ninja-To’s, they are made from wood. Then the ones that resemble European styles sword are made from polypropylene. They are fun to use for practice and they still get hurt when you get hit, so most of the time I will wear my fencing jacket when I practice with these weapons.
Besides miniature gaming and collecting fountain pens, and geeky collectables, I think my sword collecting is one of my most expensive hobbies, and just like most things you just can’t stop at just one. That is because a sword is a beautiful piece of strength with detail on the pommel, grip and cross guard. Time and effort of skill goes into each sword starting with the forging.
In a way a forger is an artist as they produce a piece of art that can never be replicated, especially if it vanishes from out society,
